AFL - the game
AFL (a.k.a. Australian Rules or Aussie Rules) is a team ball game played on a large oval field. Two teams, each consisting of 18 players, compete to score the most points in a four quarter match. Points are scored by kicking the ball through a set of goals. If the ball is kicked through the two central posts, six points are awarded. If the ball passes through the outer two posts, one point is scored.
The ball may advanced by passing or kicking. The ball may also be carried and run with so long as it is bounced, or touched to the ground every fifteen metres. Possession of the ball must be relinquished, either by kicking or handballing, if the player is tackled. If not, you'll hear the crowd scream "ball" at the umpire, urging him to give a free kick for "holding the ball".
